Working with Healing Phoenix
Fire in Place Cultured Opals
Setting Cultured Opals in Silver Metal Clay is a simple process.
The Opals can be embedded in Metal Clay, which experiences an 18% shrinkage without any adverse effects. For clays with higher shrinkage, it's advisable to create a looser setting to accommodate this change.
This process is similar to setting any other gemstone in Metal Clay, serving as a useful guideline. Ensure both sides are thoroughly cleaned with alcohol before kiln firing.
When setting the Firable Opal, a hole behind the stone is suggested to enhance its visual appeal. If the kiln's white light shines through a translucent stone, it may appear cloudy or milky in Metal Clay. This is a good practice for all stone settings.
Re-firing Cultured Opals
Proceed with caution; results can vary. A lengthy two-hour cycle at 1650ºF proved excessive for smaller stones, leading to cracks. However, a larger Cultured Opal successfully endured a shorter 30-minute firing at the same temperature.
What accounts for the difference? It may be due to the stone's size, firing duration, or a combination of both. Further testing is necessary, and we will provide updates. Our current recommendation is to fire for shorter times and lower temperatures when attempting to repair cracks.
Tumbling Safely
For safe tumbling, useix® Incredible White Mask Liquid Frisket, a liquid latex that appears as a thin milky substance.
Once dry, it becomes waterproof and protects the stone during tumbling.
Employ a pin tool or small stylus to apply the Frisket, ensuring full coverage on both sides.
You may add additional layers once the first dries, especially on pointed or faceted areas.
The final layer should appear cloudy-translucent rather than milky.
After tumbling, simply peel off the Frisket and clean tools immediately.
A hot plate can expedite the drying process. This method was tested using a vibrating tumbler with mixed stainless steel shot.
Using Patina like Liver of Sulfur
Liver of Sulfur (LOS) does not harm the stone, but it may alter the appearance of translucent stones when the LOS is visible behind them. To prevent unwanted application, use Grafix® Incredible White Mask Liquid Frisket as a resist.
Finishing with a Rotary Tool
To protect the Cultured Opal, apply quality masking tape and ensure it adheres well before using a rotary tool for polishing. While these Cultured Opals are more durable than natural opals, abrasive wheels can diminish their shine. If scratches occur, a muslin wheel with diamond paste can help remove them if they are not too deep.
